Despite its name, buckwheat isn’t related to wheat at all; in fact, it is naturally gluten-free and is part of the same family as quinoa and amaranth. Known for its bold, nutty flavor, buckwheat has become a leading ingredient for gluten-free flours and noodles, and is also a great addition to bakery foods, helping to provide texture to granola bars, cookies and other snacks.

Whole Foods recently named buckwheat one of the top 10 food trends for 2024. This pseudo-cereal is gaining popularity as a cover crop to support soil health. As more farmers commit to sustainable agricultural practices, the use of buckwheat in crackers, granola and plant-based milks is sure to grow.

Health benefits of buckwheat

Buckwheat is high in proteins, minerals and antioxidants, and its nutritional value is higher than many other grains. Nutrition facts for 3.5 ounces (100 grams) of raw buckwheat:

According to Healthline, buckwheat scores low on the glycemic index, meaning it does not cause unhealthy spikes in blood sugar levels. It also contains plenty of fiber, improving colon health. Plus, its protein has shown to be effective at lowering blood cholesterol, suppressing the formation of gallstones and reducing the risk of colon cancer.

Buckwheat is also rich in vitamins and minerals, including manganese, copper, magnesium, iron and phosphorus, all of which play an important role in human health.
